Effects of MRI Distortions for Target Definitions in Functional Treatments
Thierry Gevaert, PhD, from Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, Belgium, discusses the effects of MRI distortion on target definitions for functional treatments, with a focus on trigeminal neuralgia. He begins by giving a short overview of the disorder and its treatments before talking specifically about treatment with stereotactic radiosurgery. He then gives details on his institution’s treatment strategy for patients with the disorder. He outlines the three areas in the treatment chain – from scanning to delivery – which are responsible for inaccuracies: Targeting, dose distribution and patient positioning. He then discusses in depth targeting accuracy in relation to MRI distortion and how to overcome inaccuracies with Brainlab Elements Cranial Distortion Correction.
