Methods to Identify and Mitigate Adverse Radiation Treatment Response
Veronica Chiang, MD, from Yale-New Haven Hospital in the US discusses adverse radiation treatment effects after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), which are becoming a growing issue. She begins by outlining the side effects of standard fractionated radiation, which range from acute and subacute, like pseudoprogression, to late and delayed, such as radiation necrosis. She then discusses the management options for treating the effects of radiation necrosis, including laser thermal ablation, also known as thermal coagulation, in which a laser fiber is placed in the brain with neuronavigation. She then discusses specific case results of patients treated with this method.
