Spine SRS for the New Era of Healthcare


Deborah Benzil, MD, from Northern Westchester Hospital in New York State discusses spine radiosurgery in the current healthcare climate. She begins by outlining the past and current challenges and key considerations in this particular field. She stresses that spine radiosurgery has given hope to patients since its beginnings in 2001. Dr. Benzil outlines the advantages of spine radiosurgery then provides a few examples of cases dating back to her first case. She speaks in greater detail about the challenges of this type of innovation, including selling it as a treatment option. She stresses the importance of collaboration with neuro-radiologists, oncologists, regional radiation oncologist and neurosurgery colleagues. Finally, Dr. Benzil makes recommendations about how best to create a spine radiosurgery program in this new era of healthcare.
