Setting a new benchmark: South Africa’s first ExacTrac Dynamic Surface® (ETDS) installation
At Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, the pursuit of clinical excellence is deeply rooted in enhancing patient outcomes. Their commitment advances with the introduction of Brainlab ETDS—the first installation in South Africa and the broader region—bringing refined accuracy and real-time motion tracking to radiotherapy treatments.
Integrated with a TrueBeam® linear accelerator, this device will initially support Breath Hold (BH) workflows for breast cancer patients, a method that significantly reduces radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. Beyond breast cancer, ETDS will also be employed for thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic treatments, while improving patient setup efficiency across all cases.
Special thanks to @Tamlyn Abbott, Head of Radiation Therapy at Wits Donald Gordon Radiation Oncology Unit, and @Lunga April, Head of Physics at Johannesburg Oncology Group, for their leadership in bringing this advanced capability to the department. Their expertise and dedication were instrumental in making this milestone a reality.
